The 2020 Rose Parade will have three Grand Marshals: gymnast Laurie Hernandez, actress Gina Torres, and actress-singer-beloved pop culture figure Rita Moreno.
“The Rose Parade is something I’ve been seeing all my life on television,” the Los Angeles Times captured Moreno saying at a ceremony this morning in Pasadena. “It’s a dream come true, and I can only tell you I am absolutely thrilled.”
Moreno, most recently the star of One Day at a Time on Netflix, is famously a member of the elite entertainment industry club known as the EGOTs, those performers who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award. She first burst into the public’s consciousness as Anita in West Side Story, released 58 years ago this week.
She will share Grand Marshal duties with fellow actress Gina Torres, known for her roles on Suits and Westworld, and 19-year-old gymnast Laurie Hernandez, who won gold and silver medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics and will compete for Team USA again next summer in Tokyo.
The theme selected for this iteration of the 131 year old tradition is “The Power of Hope,” and, Tournament of Roses President Laura Farber noted in a statement that the three women selected as Grand Marshals reflect that concept. “Rita Moreno, Gina Torres, and Laurie Hernandez epitomize hope. Through their talent, efforts, persistence, and dedication, they have achieved excellence and have given back to the world stories of hope, dreams fulfilled, dignity, respect and inspiration. They have provided el Poder de La Esperanza para todo el mundo!”
The 131st Rose Parade takes place on January 1, 2020, in Pasadena.
